EMILIE COPPERMANN

The nose behind Hallucinogenic Pearl.

“When I was a child, I was fascinated by the world of scents but I didn’t know I could live from this passion.”

As every artist does, Emilie Coppermann believes in the power of dreams. Indeed she discovered her passion for the world of fragrances at the age of 14. The magical encounter with the Perfumer of the Rochas House was a determining factor in her life. She then decided to study organic chemistry and learned the job of Perfumer at the prestigious International Institute of Perfumes, Cosmetics & Aromas in Versailles.

For over 20 years, she has been working for the most prestigious fashion and designers brands. Her success relies on her capacity to follow feminine intuition. Her work has been many times awarded by peers and institutional recognitions such as Lalique Prize of the Talents du Luxe in 2011.

Accomplished woman, Emilie is also the mother of 4 children: an other job she manages with the same energy and passion !

(Bio & interview provided by Symrise)

  • I am fascinated by artist, creators, designers who managed to change the vision that society had towards art, fashion, music : Duchamp, Picasso, Chanel, Yves-Saint-Laurent.

  • When I was a child, I was fascinated by the world of scents but I didn’t know I could live from this passion. When, at the age of 13, I visited the Rochas factory and met Rochas perfumer in person, I realized that making perfume could be a career. I had then only one obsession : become a Perfumer!

  • I would say Paris. It’s the city where I grew up. I am still amazed by its beauty, the history it carries. But I am also fond of New York, Bahia, Benares, all for completely various reasons.

  • Very difficult to say as they are so many I love. Among them, two fascinate me : Rose and Bergamot. Both to go through the ages, constantly reinvented. I’m also very inspired by all kind of woods and I love to use them always in an unexpected way.

  • My four kids, of course. Having the chance to do such a fascinating job and to share my creations with others.

  • Traveling is a great source of inspiration, such a variety of smells, of places and of people. Every day, all day, can be inspiring. Life is such an endless discovery.

  • I would say unconventional and playful. I like exploring unknown paths to create unexpected things. For example, I like the idea of masculinizing a flower for a men’s fragrance or feminize ingredients that are usually associated with men like woods.

  • The Archipel of Zanzibar. A South African melting pot of culture and influences. This places mixes the beauty of wild preserved nature with the magnificence of Palaces that belonged to rich Sultans. This place has a strong connection with the trade of spices and flowers.
